Whether you’re new to the industry or an experienced executive seeking a broader perspective across the energy value chain, Rice University and Ernst & Young have designed a week-long enhanced program (offered four times a year) to help professionals gain insight into the strategic and economic factors that drive the energy industry. Rice faculty members for the Certificate of Management in Energy program include world-renowned scholars and top business leaders, all experts in their respective energy-related fields.

Curriculum topics include:

Upstream oil and gas
Gain insight into the upstream sector by analyzing the seismic analysis/production/exploitation of reservoirs. In addition, you will examine the economics and strategy behind lease bidding vs. bidding on Wall Street for reserves. Case studies and supplemental reading will be utilized.

Increase knowledge of electricity and gas marketing in North America as well as its position in the energy value chain.

Trading and risk management
Trading and risk management are ever-changing fields. Delve into futures, physicals and swaps and learn when to use them for oil, gas, electricity and financial commodities.

Sustainable development in energy
Learn about the incentives and challenges of energy companies’ environmental, social and economic sustainable development. We’ll delve into how this issue in energy companies has developed and discuss important issues such as licenses to operate, supply chain management and reporting sustainability.

Project investment appraisal for energy
Learn how to make better investments in the oil, gas and power sectors. First, you will review mergers and acquisitions, capital refinancing, and existing trends in the financial markets. Then, you will analyze the financial reality of the oil and gas sector and apply financial market theory to investments in that sector. Find out why investments drive shareholder value.

Strategy in energy
Dissect the major issues affecting different sectors of the energy industry and construct a strategy map to establish priorities and formulate methods for attaining organizational goals. Learn how to plan for revenue growth, value propositions, enhancements in products and services, and more. Course content revolves around case studies and industry examples.
